Local Designers’ Dreams Become Reality with StitchMob

By Isaac Thiang, Year 3, School of Management and Communication

If you’re someone who is interested in fashion or design, the thought of starting your own clothing line has probably crossed your mind at least once. This is no easy feat, particularly in a competitive country such as Singapore, and the road is rocky for those who seek to survive in the industry. On top of that, some might not even know how to start. This is when StitchMob comes into the picture.

We spoke to four brands that went against the odds and managed to pursue this dream of creating their own clothing brand with the help of StitchMob.

BFSATAT

Born For Such a Time As This, or BFSATAT for short, is the inspired work of travel filmmaker Adelene Kwan who paints her experiences abroad into apparel art that is ahead of its time.

“I didn’t have a flair for writing, so I can’t travel write. I write with my eyes, so the next best thing was to a designer” says Adelene

The shift towards being a designer was quite natural as Adelene translated a keen eye for aesthetics honed by her film background, and doing so allowed her to earn money while on her travels. Her experiences provided the inspiration to test out new art styles, in the way of colours, thoughts or forms and bring them to life in her designs.

“Don’t let others tell you what things are, see it for yourself” said Adelene when asked about her life philosophy.

KA

KA is a visionary creative with roguish flair who manifests the diversity and complexity of his life experiences, into majestic street style compositions of colour and culture.

KA has always been fond of creating, regardless of medium. Ethnically Swiss-British-Indian, born in Japan, and frequently travelling between Singapore and Europe, KA posseses truly unique cultural background and experience. This world around him influences the work that he produces.

“Ultimately this influences the way I live life, therefore my perspective. It affects and influences every decision I make and ultimately all the designs I create,” said KA

Some of the artists and designers that influences him the most includes Kaws, Virgil Abloh, Jerry Lorenzo and even Kanye West.

“Inspiration constantly changes as time progresses,” KA added.

LullySelb

A contemporary modest-wear brand founded by Lully and Selma (Selb), the dynamic duo at LullySelb specialise in producing stylish, street chic patterns for the modern urbanite.

With a meticulous approach to producing original & hand illustrated prints, they draw inspiration from anything that fancies them; from street culture to modern art, nature and lifestyle. Their exploratory nature has led them to create prints in various techniques and mediums.

Their electrifying synergy is reflected inside and outside of the brand, as these two adrenaline junkies and artists complement each other’s strengths well – and it shows.

“I really enjoy the process of creating, pushing myself to make something fresh and exploring colours, textures, patterns,” said Selb.

SHCK! Culture

Philosophical and poetical, SHCK! Culture's contemporary interpretations of pop culture and the human experience are an artistic expression of their deep love for life through, or as they call it - nostalgic, classic, erratic, magic graphic on fabric.
